Are you familiar with the terms "hand building" or "wheel throwing techniques?" No? Don't feel bad. I had nary a clue. You will by the end of this column. More importantly, if you participate in this week's Date Night, you may actually master the above-mentioned.
It's no secret I have a strange obsession with the concept of Date Night. It's as important as breathing or ordering dessert after every meal (including breakfast). You have to know that when a Date Night consists of an activity you two can share, this just strengthens your bond. When that activity involves actually learning something, you are on the road to being the coolest couple in town.
Fort Worth harbors a little-known secret called Hart Street Pottery. Fortunately for them, this place resides at 6346 Hart Street. It's at Hart Street Pottery where your dating future lies. Their Fall 2010 pottery classes are available and it's time you two sign up. So, what does this consist of?
Well, first things first. You need to know the definition of "hand building" and "wheel throwing." Let's start with the first. After extensive research, it appears that hand building, when referred to in pottery terms, simply means building your creation with your hands. I'm not just a hat rack, my friends. You see where we are going with wheel throwing. This is the entire process of shaping the clay on the potter's wheel.
And, now you may ask, "What is a potter's wheel?" Let me put it this way. Do you remember the scene in Ghost, with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore? Clay, hands and bodies enmeshed and Unchained Melody playing in the background. This, perhaps, is one of the most romantic scenes in cinema history.
There is no guarantee you two will get to reenact this scene while taking classes at Hart Street Pottery. But, there is a guarantee that if you decide together to take one of these 6-week classes, either on Saturday morning, Monday or Tuesday evening, you will have a blast. Perhaps, even more crucial, when is the last time you had 6 week's worth of Date Nights planned consecutively?
Still on the fence? The only requirement, other than registering, is that you wear comfortable, cleanable clothes and trim your nails. Soon, you two will be hanging out with your friends, bragging about your pottery expertise and throwing around more terms like "glazes" and "firing." Perhaps, even while drinking a beverage or eating off of something that you created with your own two (or four) little hands.
