I subscribe to a theory about naps. They were given at the wrong time in life. Sure kids get sleepy, but, they also have a ton of energy. In fact, I've been around many kids that fight a parent on taking a nap. "Son, you need to go lay down and take your nap." More running around as if no one said a word to the little one. The parent repeats her demand. Eventually it becomes a cryfest, a tantrum or an all-out conflagration.
Put me in that position. It would look like this. "Mike, I'd like you to go take a nap." Done. And, off to my sofa I go. Because, really, is there anything better than a sofa nap on a Sunday afternoon? This cannot be defended any more eloquently than whenPeggy Noonan quipped, "Naps are nature's way of reminding you that life is nice - like a beautiful, softly swinging hammock strung between birth and infinity."
There is an event coming up on a Sunday in June that might trump your afternoon nap. Actually, it should trump everything you have going on that afternoon. More importantly, if you don't have a "Date Night" already scheduled for that weekend, it is now covered. The best part, this is a true "Man's" date. Sure, the women will enjoy. But, this might be the impetus to start that weekly "Date Night" ritual by gearing it towards him.
On Sunday, June 20, 2010, picture you two at The Covey Restaurant and Brewery (3010 S. Hulen). At 3pm, they are holding their ever-popular "Beer Class." Simple name; simple idea. First things first. You call immediately to make a reservation (it fills up fast). Next up, you just show up on said Sunday.
So, what does "Beer Class" consist of? Brewmaster, Jamie Fulton, will share the intricacies of brewing beer---not just any beer, but the very best. According to their website, "For $20 per person, you’ll get a six ounce sample of each of The Covey’s world-class brews, tour our state-of-the-art brewery, participate in a question and answer session, and enjoy a most delicious cheese and sausage platter. No prerequisites required (except reservations)."
Once class is over and you've graduated (I'm not sure if diplomas will be passed out), might I recommend staying for dinner. The menu is extensive and the ambiance is comfortable, whether you choose to sit in the dining room or find that it's just impossible to leave the bar.
There is nothing like taking a class as a couple to bring you two even closer together. It really doesn't matter what that class is. It's just the quality time together and, perhaps, meeting some like-minded, fantastic new people. It could be a cooking class. Or, a pottery class (think Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore from "Ghost"). And, now a beer class.
You really can't go wrong. Humorist, Dave Barry, reinforces this week's "Date Night" recommendation when he gave us his thoughts on beer. "Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza."
