Fort Worth Date Night: Stars under the Stars

Dinner and a movie. A movie and dinner. To some, this date is the one some couples can't wait to go on. For others, it's a fall-back. The night out to pick when all creativity has completely escaped you. Either way, it's still going out and that is a good thing.

Many experts don't recommend a movie and dinner for first dates because this is the opportunity to get to know one another. Of course, if a movie is going on, learning about someone is next to impossible. Unless she texts on her cell phone the whole time or he smacks his popcorn, then, this might be a couple of great lessons learned early on. Nonetheless, talking is really crucial in this "get-to-know-you" stage or, for existing couples, spending quality time together.

But, what if you could combine the two? Enjoying a movie and still being able to chat? Wouldn't it be cool if you two could do this while enjoying the beautiful skyline of downtown Fort Worth? Under the stars? Have you heard of Sundance Square's outdoor movie series called "Stars under the Stars?"

This is a such a great idea! Best part...it's free! Worst part...it's ending on Thursday, July 1. Here's how it works. Chisholm Trail Parking Lot on the corner of 4th and Main is the location. You can bring blankets or chairs for seating. Folding chairs are available for rent. What you can't bring is pets and outside food, drinks or coolers. However, there is a snack bar area to purchase cold beverages, popcorn and sweets.

The movies begin at dusk. The July 1st showing will be Star Trek (2009). Sundance Square has also promised to bring this series back in 2011. And, don't forget that parking is free after 5 p.m. at all Sundance Square parking lots and garages. Free parking and a free movie. It doesn't get much better than that. Now, just free up some time, mark your calendar and you two head downtown to check out Star Trek. So, you truly will be watching the "stars under the stars."

Fort Worth Date Night: Experiencing Warhol’s 15 Minutes

Most of us have used or heard the expression, “their 15 minutes are up.” Never have words been more applicable than in 2010. We may know who some of the Winter Olympic stars are today, but, in a few short weeks, their names may have escaped us. What about Octomom, Balloon Boy’s dad and the couple who snuck into the White House party?

Famous artist, Andy Warhol, was spot on when he so precisely predicted, “In the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.” A phrase that will be synonymous with Warhol for eternity. On a recent Saturday afternoon, I entered The Modern Museum of Fort Worth with the exuberance and excitement of a 12-year-old girl heading to a Miley Cyrus concert. It had been months since it was announced that Andy Warhol’s final 10 years of work was coming to The Modern.

My favorite way to see an exhibit is on a guided tour. When you have a great docent, so much more is learned than just by reading the little cards hanging next to a piece of art. On that day, we once again were fortunate to be led by Barb P. Having Barb as your docent is like having Bobby Flay personally cook you a dinner at his signature restaurant. Then, come out, serve you and explain the history and rationale behind each dish. I consider Barb my “Art Sommelier.”

Warhol’s last 10 years were interesting, to say the least. From him being shot, to his TV show to his fascination with celebrity, there was a never a dull moment throughout the meandering of almost the entire second floor of The Modern. There were typical Warhol works that you are familiar and it is definitely worth the trip to see some of his later works, which he experimented with non-Warholian mediums and approaches.

Another lesser known Andy Warholism goes like this, “An artist is somebody who produces things that people don’t need to have.” This shouldn’t be a shock coming from Warhol. But, I’m going to have to disagree. And, much like Jack Nicholson’s character, Col. Nathan R. Jessep’s response in a Few Good Men, when getting cross-examined, Andy Warhol, whether it be in a gallery or a home... We want you on that wall! We need you on that wall!

Valentine's Day: Romantic enough for a woman, but, made for a man

Do you dread this time of year? Do you find yourself downplaying Valentine's Day? Always making excuses for the lack of planning or creativity on your significant other's behalf? OK, not all men are incompetent and completely clueless when it comes to being romantic. But, some of us definitely belong in this category and deservedly so.

My grandmother used to say, "if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself." This year, Valentine's Day may fall in that category. Or, perhaps, last year, your man overdid himself and this year you want to return the favor. If you are of the female gender and are in charge of being Cupid this year, here are few tips that the both of you will really enjoy. It's time to say "goodbye" to the typical reservations, chocolates and candles. These should have your guy bragging about your "Cupidness" Monday morning at the water cooler, as well as, to his buddies on the golf course or at the gym.

1. Rock Climbing: Talk about killing two birds with one stone. Whether you choose outdoor or indoor, this date will get you two going with a great workout. If you opt for indoor, you can be assured that this is the perfect "sporty" date for the beginner to the experienced. Want to make it more competitive? Race to the top and whoever loses...gives the first massage.

2. Winery/Brewery: Many towns now have wineries, breweries or microbreweries. This is a date that both men and women will enjoy. If you do have a brewery or winery near, make sure you go on the tour to learn the process. Learning something new is always fun to include in a date. Afterwards, a wine or beer tasting is equally fun to end on.

3. Bed & Breakfast (Man style): Often, when you use the word "bed and breakfast," the picture of French Country or doilies might pop into your head. A night away is not only fun for Valentine's Day, but, all throughout the year. To not exclude the more masculine tastes, some "B&B's" are built like log cabins. Another option is a stay at a ranch. Some ranches have rustic housing and activities that will be a blast for you two. One in my area offers up a "Cowboy for a Day" excursion that includes learning to ride, rope and wrangle cattle.

4. Cook Dinner: Two of my least favorite days to eat out are Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve. Many times, the restaurants are far too busy and understaffed. The food is not always the best and prices can be inflated since it's a special day. Take Valentine's Day this year to try out that new recipe. Or, perhaps, try out your kitchen for the first time. Even better, cook as a couple. The internet is saturated with very easy meals to the most complex. My suggestion: Do a search for "easy romantic meals." See where that leads you.

5. Manicure/Pedicure: I know what you my be thinking. "A mani/pedi for a guy's Valentine's Day???" Trust me on this one. And, this may be one you don't tell him where you are going first. But, this is so fun to do as a couple. It's also very relaxing and the perfect "mood setter" for the rest of the evening. Speaking of "mood setter," have you ever wondered why a foot massage is often referred to as "better than sex" or "orgasmic?" Apparently, the part of the brain that is connected to the feet lies right next to the part of the brain that is connected to the reproductive organs. I'm just sayin'...

Of course, it's not always the girl's job to plan everything. Especially, a romantic day like Valentine's Day. Perhaps, the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have done unto yourself" applies here. By creating this amazing Valentine's Day, you might be setting the tone for future ones to come. And, by including yourself in the festivities, you are guaranteeing a great Valentine's. No matter who plans it. Enjoy!

Fort Worth Date Night: Getting schooled

There are a lot of pressures with the purchase of a new calendar. First and foremost, the back-to-back, long holidays are a year away. Sure, there's a Monday in May if you don't get President's Day off in February. July 4 falls on a Sunday this year, so, hopefully, your boss will let you have the following Monday off, as well. Seriously, are you really going to be productive that day?

Another great pressure is this whole "New Year's Resolutions" movement. Why do we have to make these life-altering decisions every year at the same time? Why can't these decisions be made on Arbor Day? Not much is happening then. Or, Groundhog's Day? The excitement is over by 7 a.m. It's pretty slow after that.

Actually, I am huge proponent of goals. If it takes the year starting over to make these dreams become a reality, then so be it. Think of it as a "life reboot." So, what are your resolutions? The popular ones are usually to get in shape, to be a better person, to volunteer more, to make more money and so on. Hopefully, whether it be any of the above or ones that are not listed, you can see your resolutions come to fruition this year.

For those in relationships, do you make a "couples" resolution? This is great for two reasons. You have a built-in accountability partner. The other is simple. A happy couple makes a happy home. One of my resolutions in 2010 is to help more couples get closer and become more "couple-ish." I want to make 2010 the year that it's cool to be romantic. Here is my first contribution.

Education is so important. We all know this. It helps us advance in our careers. It keeps us younger by stimulating our brains. And it could be your very first couple's resolution for this year.

Our beloved Texas Christian University offers many classes through its Extended Education Program. These are open to the community and are offered at times that are convenient for those who have real jobs and families, primarily, nights and weekends. The classes are a blast to take as a couple.

Extended Ed offers a large variety of choices for just about anyone. Some of the choices have to do with art, dance, photography, wine, jewelry making, history, gardening, yoga and so much more. You can even take trips with experts. The classes usually run one night or day, or just a handful of times, so you are not committed for a full semester.

Talk to your significant other and finally pick out something to, not only do together, but, learn together. This might be the most important Date Night you guys go on this year. As someone once joked, please don't let this year be the year that your "New Year resolutions go in one year and out the other."

Fort Worth Date Night: Fort Worth Date Night: A real piece of work

Christmas is on a Friday this year. I’m guessing Date Night this weekend will be “Family Night.” In fact, this may be “Family Weekend.” Not a problem. I understand.

Let’s say you two are not married or are married with no kids. Christmas might be a one-day celebration and you are looking for something to do on Saturday or Sunday. Before I suggest what to do, let me throw out a couple of “what not to do’s.”

If you hear the words “mall” or “store,” run, don’t walk, to the nearest exit. Not that there is anything wrong with shopping. You can only imagine the traffic and congestion near anywhere things are bought or sold. Sure, the bargains may be great, but, the customer service may not be the best as the returns will be the highest of any day. Basically, retail = stress. Anything stress-related is not conducive to a productive Date Night.

Might I also suggest staying away from restaurants? I know what you may be thinking, “But, Mike, you (heart) food!” And, I do. But, Christmas is a big gorging day. Overeating and being miserable is also not germane to a romantic Date Night.

How about this? A Date Night that combines culture, exercise and quality time. The perfect after-Christmas date. Fort Worth has become known for its culture. With its great theater, great music and great art, it’s hard not to find something to enjoy. This is why I’m suggesting one or all three of the major Fort Worth museums this weekend.

If you are looking for modern, then The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is your place. It has fascinating exhibits, a wonderful cafe and even a movie theater. Should western and American classics be your cup of tea, then, the Amon Carter Museum is your destination. And, to round out the trifecta, you can’t forget the Kimbell Art Museum. As their Web site states, “The Kimbell Art Museum’s holdings include artworks ranging in period from antiquity to the 20th century.”

These three museums are all just a stone’s throw from one another. Depending how much you love art or how much you indulged the previous day, hitting all three in one afternoon is definitely attainable. Or, perhaps, you can approach the museums with a sense of humor, much like that of comedian Steven Wright who once quipped, “I went to the museum where they had all the heads and arms from the statues that are in all the other museums.” Have a safe and romantic holiday and New Year! Go Frogs!

Fort Worth Date Night: Fort Worth Date Night: This Sleigh Ride will be one of "Epic" Proportions

One of the most appealing aspects of Christmas Eve is the thought of Santa and his reindeer flying through the sky. In a perfect world, the weather would be cold, snow falling and, as you look up, your view would be that of a starry sky with Santa's sled leaving a stream of light as he quickly maneuvers throughout the world. After all, the guy has a lot to get done in a short period. Talk about being in more than one place at a time.

You have to be a little jealous of Santa's view. Can you imagine what the holiday scene on the ground is like from above? Colored lights for miles, glistening snow on the ground and rooftops and white smoke billowing from fireplaces into the sky. Sure, we can get in our cars and drive around searching for the neighborhoods with the best holiday lights and decorated houses. Some areas have gained so much popularity that it might take hours to drive a couple of blocks. Kind of takes away from the holiday spirit, right?

This year, don't make that mistake. This week's Date Night suggestion would even make Santa jealous. Have you heard of Epic Helicopters? Fort Worth Date Night: Taking your relationship to new heights! (FW Business Press)

Can you believe it has been 23 years since the movie, Top Gun, was released? If you are a guy, you remember how cool it was to don a leather bomber jacket and feel as if you were in the cockpit of a fighter jet. I'm pretty sure the female faction all remember the fine acting and the amazing landscapes which make for a great backdrop to the movie. Who am I kidding? You guys are still talking about the "volleyball" scene.

Regardless, Top Gun introduced us to what really goes on in the planes and behind the scenes. Fortunately, this weekend, Fort Worth has the opportunity to experience some of those planes firsthand.

This Saturday and Sunday, October 24-25, marks the return of the Fort Worth Alliance Air Show. According to their official website (www.allianceairshow.com/), "The US Navy Blue Angels and the US Army Golden Knights are coming to North Texas. Bring the family for a full-day of daring aerobatic maneuvers, static displays (including Warbirds, helicopters and jets), simulators, children's activities, fun food and more."

Two perfect fall days are scheduled for this weekend. This is another one of those Date Night recommendations that is off the beaten path. It is not your normal "dinner and a movie." This air show is one of those dates that might start a tradition. If nothing else, it's a way of celebrating our men and women in uniform and the honorable work they do. Not to mention, you two, outdoors, experiencing a great time together.

Also, according to the air show's website, "Admission is FREE. Parking is $20 per vehicle. Gates are open from 9 am to 5 pm. The same show is held from approximately 10 am to 5 pm both days. The Fort Worth Alliance Air Show is a non-profit event with the goal of raising funds for beneficiaries in Fort Worth and Tarrant County."
This is one of those weekends where you need to be on the same page. You both have to want to participate. It just wouldn't be the same if one went solo. After all, like Maverick was told in Top Gun, "You never, never leave your wingman!"

Fort Worth Date Night: The solution to marital bliss...and world peace (FW Business Press)

There is one common, unsolicited complaint I have heard over the last few weeks. It has nothing to do with the economy, politicians or Chicago not being awarded the Olympics. Personally, it is one of those pet peeves that no one has any control over. I usually embrace the issue or don't give it much weight. Others, not so much.

Of course, I'm referring to the weather. We've all been hearing the moaning about the rain and the groaning about the cold. People often have short memories. Was it not just a few weeks ago everyone was complaining about the heat or that it was too dry? Perhaps, one of the downsides of living in Texas. Yes, the elements, as of late, feel like Seattle. I get it!

However, I will give the naysayers one tip of the hat. The cloudy, cool, rainy weather can eventually take its toll. Perhaps, it may even cause a few blues. And, as we all know, the blues are not conducive to romance or a happy relationship. Fortunately, in Fort Worth, we have several places that dish up just what the doctor ordered.

Sure, I could recommend some of the obvious solutions. Prozac? Maybe. The gym? Sure. Sugary bites of deliciousness? Done!

Cupcakes seem to have medicinal value. I have not checked WebMD for what all they cure, but, in my own blind study, cupcakes are pretty remarkable.

For that "I don't want to get out of bed" kind of day, head to Sublime Bakery (5512 S. Bellaire Drive, #A). Catherine Ruehle and her team make a chocolate cupcake with chocolate icing. Sounds pretty standard, right? Think again. Much like finding a prize in a box of Cracker Jacks, this cupcake has one, too. Let's just call it a dollop of chocolate ganache. And, when you find it, you will know. More importantly, your taste buds will love you for it. Just writing about chocolate ganache and thinking about how amazing that first bite is, I'm already starting to feel better.

Another great choice is Cupcake Cottage (5015 El Campo Ave.). I'm a big fan of the cookies and cream cupcake. How can you not be? To not like anything even remotely resembling an Oreo is probably in the same vain as burning the flag. Or, not liking puppies. You get the idea.

If you haven't heard about j.rae’s (935 Foch St.), you are missing out. Everything there is uber delicious. But, when it comes to cupcakes, I'm sticking with my favorite...the red velvet! One bite and your heart will melt. I would liken it to your first kiss or the first time you laid eyes on your future spouse. You'll stare at it a little longer and you'll get butterflies in your belly. This is the perfect choice to bring home when you say the wrong thing or upset your better half. Seriously, no one can stay mad after eating one of these red velvet cupcakes. Come to think of it, I may win the Nobel Peace Prize for discovering the possible solution to world peace...the red velvet cupcake from j. rae's.

Lastly, I can't forget Central Market. I love to support the small business owner. However, I've come across a cupcake at Central Market that should be illegal. If not, it might be banned, much like cell phones, while driving or operating heavy equipment. It is the tiramisu cupcake. First of all, the cake-to-icing ratio is perfect. Perfect, for me, that is. Primarily, because they are extremely generous in their portions. Next, is my love for tiramisu. An Italian dessert that literally means, "Pick me up." Once you've eaten one of these gems, you'll understand why it was so appropriately named.

Cupcakes are an important element in today's society. As you've read, they help with depression (please check with your doctor to verify these claims), they may lead to solving world peace (please check with your United Nations to verify these claims) and they just put a smile on your face (true). More importantly, cupcakes should never be underestimated or taken for granted. This is best summed up by a dialog that took place on The Simpsons:

Bart: It was an accident, ma’am!

Judge Constance Harm: “Don’t spit on my cupcake and tell me it’s frosting!”

Fort Worth Date Night: The grass is always greener on the other side (FW Business Press)

We should all be familiar with old proverb, "The grass is always greener on the other side." This means that while we may love what we have, because we already have it, someone else's "whatever" is more appealing. Let me clarify this in culinary terms.

Have you ever been to McDonald's and just ordered a burger? However, your friend ordered a burger and fries. Being the kind friend, he or she offers you a fry or two. "Wow!" comes to mind as this may be the best fry you've ever eaten. Is it really the best fry? Or, are they that good because you didn't order any and should have?

Fort Worth has been abuzz lately about Paco & John Mexican Diner (1116 8th Ave, Fort Worth). So abuzzed that I met an old friend there recently to see what all the fuss was about. Based on the wait at lunch during the week, apparently Fort Worth is in the know.

My problem with food is that once I start thinking about it, I'm ready to eat right there; right now. This is why Mexican food restaurants are genius. Immediately upon sitting down, a very nice person, perhaps an angel from heaven, delivers chips and salsa. This is definitely a selling point in my decision-making when it comes to a dining locale. Paco & John's did not disappoint in the "chip" department.

Ordering was fun. Lots of great choices. Breakfast foods or lunch foods? And, the torta (Mexican sandwich) selection was fairly extensive. More importantly, what I saw being brought out to the tables was Ginormous! Let's just hope that quality trumped quantity.

So, I went with the chicken flautas and mi amigo went with the Cuban Press. What's a Cuban Press you might ask. It's a sandwich on the torta bread that is, according to Paco & John's menu, "Ham, roasted pork loin, cheese, pickles, heated." Our first thought when the Cuban Press was sat so eloquently in front of him, was, "Holy Smokes! That thing is huge!" He immediately began cutting into it and offered me up some of the goods.

Based on the ingredients, this would not be a sandwich I would normally order. However, after eating my first bite, what happened next might be described as a "religious experience." Harps were playing, angels were singing...I believe I even saw a strong, white light summoning me.

Did I have lunch envy? Absolutely! However, I do look forward to returning to check out much of their other offerings, from the great breakfasts to the higher-end entrees at dinner. Just make sure if you invite me, be fully prepared to share. As I have learned, the grass is often greener on the other side of the table.

Fort Worth Date Night: Pizza, Pinot and Patio: Alliteration at its best! (FW Business Press)

A crucial element of dating is all in the planning. Knowing where you are going, when you are going and all the details help alleviate problems later on when it's time to actually go on your date. However, it is fun occasionally to just see where the night takes you.

Which is exactly what happened to me recently. Someone close to me that we'll refer to as Plus One (+1) asked if I'd go with her to an upscale kitchen store to buy a wedding shower gift. How could I say "no" to that? What I did discover is that I make an awesome holder of the printed wedding registry. Apparently, I'm also very good at carrying the large, wrapped box to the car. Afterwards, our plan was to find somewhere to eat. Preferably, a place with a patio. So, off we go.

Our first stop was to a well-known, high-end wine bar & pizzeria. What we found was a long wait. Then, it was agreed upon that the dining destination would be Central Market. On the way there, +1 commented....correction...was adamant about "NEEDING" salad and pizza. Bingo! We are a block away.

What started off as a uncharted journey turned out to be finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. We ended up at Brix Pizza and Wine Bar (2747 S. Hulen, Fort Worth). Close your eyes for a second. Well, after you read this. The sky is clear. The weather is perfect and hovering around the low 70's. The small, but, romantically lit patio is inviting and a table summons us to sit down as if it had been waiting all day for us to arrive.

I'll get to the food in a second, but, equally impressive was our server. Leo...correction...Leonardo. "Leonardo" said with a strong Italian accent. He would go on to make our evening a great one. But, it was late and what did we come for? Food!

Opting for salads to start, me with the Caesar and +1 went with the Brix Salad. Both excellent choices. While their menu is somewhat extensive, deciding was easy as this had been discussed en route. We were going with the Margherita pizza. But, the menu threw us a hitch in our giddy up. Right below the Margherita was the Brix Signature Pizza. On the menu, both are listed with the exact same ingredients...Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella and Fresh Basil. After getting clarity from Leo, the Brix Signature Pizza was the way to go. The only difference was that this one was prepared with fresh, homemade mozzarella. Oh my!

What came out was a pizza that was reminiscent of being in Italy. A thin, crispy crust topped with the freshest ingredients and Brix had two happy campers. While full might be what my stomach was telling me, something prompted me to ask Leonardo about dessert. He mentioned three amazing-sounding options. Those being Tiramisu, Cannoli and Nutella Pizza. I believe I even whimpered when "Nutella" was mentioned, but, it was his reaction to the Cannoli that led us to that one. Like the rest of the meal, it did not disappoint. And, like the rest of the meal, there were no remnants of food left on the plate.

This was definitely one of those evenings where the planets were aligned. Perfect weather, inviting atmosphere, wonderful food and an ambiance that screamed 'Date Night!" Thank you, Universe, for delivering all of the above-mentioned. And, thank you for Brix!

Fort Worth Date Night: You had me at "chicken-fried steak!" (FW Business Press)

On a recent birthday celebration with my "random" group of friends from high school, I learned that friends should never be taken for granted. In the same lightbulb moment, it also struck me that food also should not be taken for granted. Like an old college entrance exam question, can I now deduce that food is equal to a friend? I've always known that food is my friend. And, in sad or down times, perhaps, even my best friend.

In my world, there is no better comfort food than anything fried. The State Fair of Texas is nearing and much of the media focus is on the fried offerings from the Fair. Mouth-watering selections such as fried Snickers, fried peanut butter and jelly and this year's all abuzz about fried butter. My first thought was, "Yech!" That is, until I saw it being made on a morning show. Now, my opinion has changed. I'm actually looking forward to trying that artery-blocking concoction.

But, I'm a little more traditional. I am partial to the good ol' chicken-fried steak (CFS). Very simply, a steak that is breaded and fried. While I try to watch my girlish figure, every few months I crave chicken-fried steak. Well, my yearning has been yelling at me, as of late. Thank goodness for a friend's birthday celebration to fill my unanswered prayer.

We recently found ourselves at Grady's Restaurant (2443 Forest Park Blvd.). Well-known restauranteur and chef, Grady Spear's, newest eatery. As a lifelong resident of Fort Worth, I was immediately brought back to the days of when Le Chardonnay filled this locale. Even as a youngster, I always loved this space. It was quaint, quiet and the ambiance was soothing. Grady's has not lost that. On a rainy, stormy night, it was calm, cozy and comfortable.

Upon perusing the menu, could I really have anything else but the chicken-fried steak? C'mon! This is what Grady is known for. Besides, my buddy, Big Dave, was just as excited about the chicken-fried steak as a kid waking up on Christmas morning. We had to do this together. We had to have a male bonding moment and share the CFS experience. Much like two fraternity brothers going through pledgeship together.

So, the CFS arrives and it really was picture-worthy. If the statement that everything is bigger in Texas is true, then, the CFS from Grady's won't disappoint. This bad boy is massive. But, forget about the size. What about the taste and quality? I'm going to have to go with two big thumbs up. Wow! Great quality steak, perfectly breaded and topped with a perfect cream gravy. Not to mention, it was all resting comfortably on a bed of green onion mashed potatoes. Big Dave and I left no evidence of our gluttony. For any of you who were Friends watchers, we definitely needed the maternity pants that Joey wore when he bet that he could finish the Thanksgving turkey.

Everyone else loved what they ordered. Some went with entrees and others loaded up on appetizers. If you are looking for a fantastic meal, a romantic setting and an environment that will allow you two to really connect, Grady's will be the perfect choice. I'm pretty sure the famous foodie, Charlie Trotter, summed up my experience precisely when he said, "All four elements were happening in equal measure – the cuisine, the wine, the service and the overall ambience. It taught me that dining could happen at a spiritual level."

Fort Worth Date Night: Café Aspen hits the Big 2-0! (FW Business Press)

English writer, Aldous Huxley, once wrote, “Facts do not cease to exist just because they are ignored.” The fact remains that Café Aspen is still here. Fort Worth has seen its share of eateries come and go. The only thing Café Aspen has done over the last 20 years is expand in size and maintain its fan base.  With the 747 (approximation) new restaurants either already opened or planning to open this year on the west side of Fort Worth, the odds are stacked against them. To be open 20 years in the restaurant industry is impressive.

What started off as a small restaurant on West Seventh Street exactly 20 years ago is now an established fixture on Camp Bowie.  Like many businesses, it has gone through several overhauls. It has arguably one of the most quaint, romantic bar areas in town. Also impressive is their newest addition added a few years back, their outdoor patio/bar. 

Back to the facts. The fact that owner, David Rotman, is not from Fort Worth should not be held against him. Originally from Austin, he’s more or less a Fort Worthian.  I’m not sure we could get rid of him if we tried. He was not only a TCU Horned Frog, but, a little known fact is that David was a cheerleader while attending. GO FROGS! The fact that Rotman has an amazing support system around him also speaks volumes for Café Aspen. Dedicated and loyal staff…check.  Loving and amazing wife, Andrea…check.  Beautiful and adorable daughter, Lucinda…check.  You can’t argue with the facts.

Since this week marks a milestone for Café Aspen and Mr. Rotman, David has decided to give back to the community as a sign of appreciation for 20 years of patronage. Through April 18 you can get the Pepper Crusted Beef Tenderloin for only $12.95.  One of Aspen’s best sellers, the menu describes this beef dish as “Pepper crusted beef tenderloin, pan seared and finished in the oven. Topped with a roasted garlic and bleu cheese sauce.  Paired with grilled portabello mushrooms and roasted fingerling potatoes.”  If this alone doesn’t draw you two in for this week’s Date Night, I’m not sure what will. 

Since April 17 is the actual anniversary date of Café Aspen, there is also this one-day offer that is equally generous.  Friday only, all entrees are 20 percent off.  Let me repeat that.  All entrees are 20 percent off. This doesn’t mean the total bill, drinks, desserts, T-shirts or anything else.  Just the entrees.  Also, there will be no double-dipping.  If you take advantage of the $12.95 beef tenderloin, you cannot take 20 percent off that.  David is generous; he’s not stupid.

If you have never been to Café Aspen or it has been a while, please stop by and give it a try. At the least, congratulate David Rotman on an accomplishment that very few in this town have been able to achieve.  Not many people stay in their jobs for 20 years. Most marriages don’t last 20 years. And, we all know the usual fate of a new restaurant. But, Café Aspen has done it. And, done it with class, grace and consistency. Great job, David!  Salud!

Fort Worth Date Night: It’s all about ME! (Fort Worth Business Press)

Last Friday was my birthday.  I’m not the type to get excited about birthdays.  Everyone around me gets excited.  Me...not so much. A few weeks out, the questions and e-mails started, “Are you looking forward to the big day?”  And, this wasn’t even a big one. I suppose that, growing up, I never wanted to look forward to something just in case I was disappointed. This transferred over to adulthood. I’m very baseline when it comes to the excitement level in regards to my personal celebrations.

Back to last Friday.  PR Chick asked me weeks out to take me to lunch on my birthday. Her birthday actually fell the day after, so, we were looking at a mini-combination celebration. However, since lunch was transpiring on my actual birthday…the focus was on me. PR Chick lives in Dallas and we decided to meet in Fort Worth. After much thought, I chose Lili’s Bistro on Magnolia. I’ve heard about this place, read about it, sent clients there, but, had never personally experienced what all the fuss was about.

So, last Friday was the big day. I arrive to see PR Chick holding a huge “birthday-looking” gift bag. I already love Lili’s. It’s not a big place.  And, everyone in Fort Worth must have gotten the same memo as there was a bit of a wait.  I’m not a big fan of waiting, but, we were already there, that was the plan and nothing was going to change. I’m eating at Lili’s!

After we were finally seated and given menus, I did what anyone else would have done. I ripped into my birthday bag. Then, it was time to focus on the matter-at-hand. It was time to order. The menu is diverse, but, EVERYTHING on it sounded amazing. People waiting around us talked up the burgers.  I was really leaning towards the Tilapia tacos. However, when it came time to make the decision, I went with the sesame seed chicken. As long as the wait was, the order seemed to come out pretty quickly. I was not disappointed.  And, the portions are huge. Two of my favorite things…large portions and great food! 

The perfectly-crusted chicken was sitting on a bed of rice. However, one of the most impressive parts of the plate was what came with the entrée. A basic lettuce wedge with a Gorgonzola dressing and bacon crumbles.  Sounds pretty ho-hum, right?  PR Chick and I both agreed that we could have eaten just a large plate of the salad. By the way, PR Chick ordered salmon and was “Mmmm-ing” equally as much as I was. However, the “Mmmm’s” turned to “Ahhhh’s” when dessert arrived.

We went with the Rocky Roady Fudge Torte. Words can’t really do it justice.  Perhaps, the menu says it’s best… “Chocolate chip cookie crust, Belgian chocolate, butter, cream cheese and almond middle, and a cream cheese frosting top. Drizzled with chocolate ganache.” My first bite was pretty intense.  So many things going on at one time. It was time to turn our lunch into a CSI crime scene and unlock each mystery layer one-by-one. After dissecting this cake and sent walking with a full belly and a bag of birthday presents, there was only one thing that could top lunch at Lili’s Bistro on Magnolia…a birthday nap!

Clam chowder, the Golden Gate Bridge, Ghirardelli Square and all the great hole-in-the-wall restaurants make San Francisco one of the top tourist spots in the country...if not, the world. I have been fortunate enough to visit this great city. It was not December, so, the city was not all "holidayed" out with lights. One of the top visitor attractions during December is a Christmas Light tour on a cable car. How fun would that be???

There is another Frisco and it is much closer to the DFW area. It just doesn't have a "San" in front of it. Each year, the town of Frisco proudly plays host to "Christmas in the Square." Frisco is expecting over 450,000 visitors during its run. There will be many activities going on each night from 5:30 pm to 10 pm through January 1, 2009.

Perhaps the most memorable aspect of Christmas in the Square is the Christmas lights. Their Web site describes the whole experience as, "The largest choreographed holiday lights and music display in Texas combined with family-oriented activities to produce a 'signature destination event' for Frisco."
