Fort Worth Date Night: Appreciating the grape

One reason couples don’t often succeed is that it becomes too easy to take each other for granted. Life either becomes too simple or the difficulties become bigger than a relationship. Sometimes this wisdom comes with age, experience, a death, a birth or a life-changing event.

As I’ve matured, I’ve started to realize the importance of simply being grateful. To not focus on what I don’t have, but, rather, how rich my life truly is. This may be one of the keys to a successful relationship. Willie Nelson, who is known to have had an interesting life, really summed up this point best when he said, “When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around.”

You can start with the easy ones. Family, loved ones, kids, a job, a house and so on. But, be creative. I’ll get you started. I am thankful for chocolate, especially, Peanut M&M’s. I’m grateful for Thai food. There’s something about eating that perfect dish of Pad Thai. I’m even thankful for wine. Wine? Yes, wine. And, apparently, I’m not the only one. Grapevine has devoted a whole weekend to the showing the city’s appreciation for the stuff.

Over the weekend of April 16 and 17, Grapevine will be celebrating its 18th annual Blessing of the Vines and New Vintage Wine & Gallery Trail. What does this all mean? A lot of sampling of wines! There are many activities going on during this annual celebration. Some of these include actual blessings at wineries, an actual Wine Trail, which involves a trip through historic Grapevine, wineries and several others events.

However, the most “date-rific” activity might be the New Vintage Jazz Wine Trains. Such a brilliant idea to combine food, wine and live jazz all while cruising along in a train. According to the Website, “The popular Jazz Wine Train will run on two evenings - April 16 and 17 - at the Grapevine Vintage Railroad, located at Grapevine’s historic Cotton Belt Depot at 705 S. Main Street. The captivating excursion features several Grapevine wines, delicious dinner and live jazz entertainment in each passenger car. The Jazz Wine Train boards both evenings at 6:40 p.m., departs at 7 p.m. and returns at 9:30 p.m. Tickets are $55 per person.”

Often times in relationships, experts say that if you don’t want to lose your partner, you better “get on board.” Perhaps, this Jazz Wine Train is a metaphor for the ideal couple. For those in need of a night out and for those who still date regularly. Just remember that while you are blessing the wine, take a moment to also be thankful for who you are sharing this experience with. Salud!

Fort Worth Date Night: Power Hour

One of the most commonly asked questions I get is, "What if we never have time for Date Night?" My answer to that is "You have to make time for Date Night." It's much like wanting to get in shape, but, not having time to get to the gym.

A big misconception about "Date Night" is that it has to be a full evening on a weekend or a swanky night out. I often suggest it can be during the week, at breakfast or whenever you two decide. That is the beauty of being the co-boss of your relationship. You just have to plan something.

Let me introduce you to something I've coined called "Power Hour." This is like speed dating, but, not in the sense that you are familiar. Power Hour is a mini-date that lasts no longer than 60 minutes. It's designed to get the two of you alone, out of the house and to enjoy some quality time when a full evening just won't work. And, no, going to the local home improvement store doesn't count.

Here are my Top 5 Power Hours to do in Fort Worth:

1) Ol' South Pancake House (1507 S University Dr.) - This is a staple in Fort Worth. Under new ownership, the place has gotten a facelift, the menus have been changed and I think the food is better. Don't know what to get? They are known for their German Pancakes. Much like a folded massive crepe, it is stuffed with a buttery, lemony, powder sugary concoction that will make your eyes roll in the back of your head.

2) Artisan Bakery (4900 White Settlement Road) - Perhaps Fort Worth's best kept secret. Gwin and her staff do an amazing job of baking the freshest, tastiest goodies. Their scones are scrumptious. From ones with fruit to jalapeno, bacon and cheese, you just never know what they'll drum up. As an admitted chocoholic, the Triple Chocolate cookie is inexplicably the best! Stop by Artisan, pick up some goods and find a nice park bench to enjoy. They can also be found every Saturday morning at the Cowtown Farmers Market on Alta Mere (Traffic Circle).

3) Curly's Frozen Custard (4017 Camp Bowie Blvd) - Strategically placed on the Camp Bowie bricks, Curly's is a great place to get away for a treat and some relaxation. With the amazing spring weather, I can't think of a better hour spent than with your +1, nursing a Curly's Crunch and listening to the slow trickle of their courtyard fountain. As a bonus, Curly's is dog-friendly and this is one date you are allowed to bring a third wheel.

4) Japanese Garden - Nestled in Fort Worth's Botanic Garden, the Japanese Garden is perhaps the most tranquil date you two will have. Unless, of course, you plan a spa day. But, that would defeat Power Hour, right? Just meandering through these gardens will drop your blood pressure, make you appreciate one another and, the best part, it's not even necessary to talk. Just show up, walk around, breathe and enjoy your surroundings. And, don't forget to bring quarters. You'll have a blast feeding the massive Koi.

5) Donation Dash - This is not a restaurant or a 10K run. This is another "Mike-ism" that allows you and your significant other the opportunity to give back. How does this work? For 30 to 45 minutes (set your timer), you simply clean out your garage, a closet, a drawer...whatever it is that needs to be purged or organized. When your time is up, load up your car and head to your nearest donation station. Whether it's a kiosk or a storefront, many are open 7 days-a-week. This, perhaps, will be your most satisfying and rewarding date.

Do the names Burt Ward and Adam West ring a bell? When I was a child, I could not wait to get home from school so I could watch these caped crusaders fight crime every afternoon. These were the actors who portrayed Batman and Robin in the TV series.

Several movies have been made based on these comic book characters throughout the years. Often fighting evil wrongdoers such as Mr. Freeze, The Joker, The Riddler and, one of my personal favorites, The Penguin, played brilliantly by Burgess Meredith.

The Penguin was just cool. He had a little bit of swagger to him. Always carrying a sort of calm and laid back confidence while wearing a formal tuxedo. Much like that of a real penguin. Fortunately, for real penguins, they arrive donning the formal attire.

I'd be remiss if I didn't start talking about Valentine's Day. It's one week from this weekend. Sure, there are still reservations available at some great eateries around town. Or, you could opt to stay in an celebrate in a more private manner and cook for the just the two of you. Or, you could celebrate by giving her a penguin. Yep, I said it. A penguin.

Fort Worth Date Night: Fort Worth Date Night: A real piece of work

Christmas is on a Friday this year. I’m guessing Date Night this weekend will be “Family Night.” In fact, this may be “Family Weekend.” Not a problem. I understand.

Let’s say you two are not married or are married with no kids. Christmas might be a one-day celebration and you are looking for something to do on Saturday or Sunday. Before I suggest what to do, let me throw out a couple of “what not to do’s.”

If you hear the words “mall” or “store,” run, don’t walk, to the nearest exit. Not that there is anything wrong with shopping. You can only imagine the traffic and congestion near anywhere things are bought or sold. Sure, the bargains may be great, but, the customer service may not be the best as the returns will be the highest of any day. Basically, retail = stress. Anything stress-related is not conducive to a productive Date Night.

Might I also suggest staying away from restaurants? I know what you may be thinking, “But, Mike, you (heart) food!” And, I do. But, Christmas is a big gorging day. Overeating and being miserable is also not germane to a romantic Date Night.

How about this? A Date Night that combines culture, exercise and quality time. The perfect after-Christmas date. Fort Worth has become known for its culture. With its great theater, great music and great art, it’s hard not to find something to enjoy. This is why I’m suggesting one or all three of the major Fort Worth museums this weekend.

If you are looking for modern, then The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is your place. It has fascinating exhibits, a wonderful cafe and even a movie theater. Should western and American classics be your cup of tea, then, the Amon Carter Museum is your destination. And, to round out the trifecta, you can’t forget the Kimbell Art Museum. As their Web site states, “The Kimbell Art Museum’s holdings include artworks ranging in period from antiquity to the 20th century.”

These three museums are all just a stone’s throw from one another. Depending how much you love art or how much you indulged the previous day, hitting all three in one afternoon is definitely attainable. Or, perhaps, you can approach the museums with a sense of humor, much like that of comedian Steven Wright who once quipped, “I went to the museum where they had all the heads and arms from the statues that are in all the other museums.” Have a safe and romantic holiday and New Year! Fort Worth Date Night: Fort Worth Date Night: This Sleigh Ride will be one of "Epic" Proportions

One of the most appealing aspects of Christmas Eve is the thought of Santa and his reindeer flying through the sky. In a perfect world, the weather would be cold, snow falling and, as you look up, your view would be that of a starry sky with Santa's sled leaving a stream of light as he quickly maneuvers throughout the world. After all, the guy has a lot to get done in a short period. Talk about being in more than one place at a time.

You have to be a little jealous of Santa's view. Can you imagine what the holiday scene on the ground is like from above? Colored lights for miles, glistening snow on the ground and rooftops and white smoke billowing from fireplaces into the sky. Sure, we can get in our cars and drive around searching for the neighborhoods with the best holiday lights and decorated houses. Some areas have gained so much popularity that it might take hours to drive a couple of blocks. Kind of takes away from the holiday spirit, right?

This year, don't make that mistake. This week's Date Night suggestion would even make Santa jealous. Have you heard of Epic Helicopters? Fort Worth Date Night: The grass is always greener on the other side (FW Business Press)

We should all be familiar with old proverb, "The grass is always greener on the other side." This means that while we may love what we have, because we already have it, someone else's "whatever" is more appealing. Let me clarify this in culinary terms.

Have you ever been to McDonald's and just ordered a burger? However, your friend ordered a burger and fries. Being the kind friend, he or she offers you a fry or two. "Wow!" comes to mind as this may be the best fry you've ever eaten. Is it really the best fry? Or, are they that good because you didn't order any and should have?

Fort Worth has been abuzz lately about Paco & John Mexican Diner (1116 8th Ave, Fort Worth). So abuzzed that I met an old friend there recently to see what all the fuss was about. Based on the wait at lunch during the week, apparently Fort Worth is in the know.

My problem with food is that once I start thinking about it, I'm ready to eat right there; right now. This is why Mexican food restaurants are genius. Immediately upon sitting down, a very nice person, perhaps an angel from heaven, delivers chips and salsa. This is definitely a selling point in my decision-making when it comes to a dining locale. Paco & John's did not disappoint in the "chip" department.

Ordering was fun. Lots of great choices. Breakfast foods or lunch foods? And, the torta (Mexican sandwich) selection was fairly extensive. More importantly, what I saw being brought out to the tables was Ginormous! Let's just hope that quality trumped quantity.

So, I went with the chicken flautas and mi amigo went with the Cuban Press. What's a Cuban Press you might ask. It's a sandwich on the torta bread that is, according to Paco & John's menu, "Ham, roasted pork loin, cheese, pickles, heated." Our first thought when the Cuban Press was sat so eloquently in front of him, was, "Holy Smokes! That thing is huge!" He immediately began cutting into it and offered me up some of the goods.

Based on the ingredients, this would not be a sandwich I would normally order. However, after eating my first bite, what happened next might be described as a "religious experience." Harps were playing, angels were singing...I believe I even saw a strong, white light summoning me.

Did I have lunch envy? Absolutely! However, I do look forward to returning to check out much of their other offerings, from the great breakfasts to the higher-end entrees at dinner. Just make sure if you invite me, be fully prepared to share. As I have learned, the grass is often greener on the other side of the table.

Fort Worth Date Night: Pizza, Pinot and Patio: Alliteration at its best! (FW Business Press)

A crucial element of dating is all in the planning. Knowing where you are going, when you are going and all the details help alleviate problems later on when it's time to actually go on your date. However, it is fun occasionally to just see where the night takes you.

Which is exactly what happened to me recently. Someone close to me that we'll refer to as Plus One (+1) asked if I'd go with her to an upscale kitchen store to buy a wedding shower gift. How could I say "no" to that? What I did discover is that I make an awesome holder of the printed wedding registry. Apparently, I'm also very good at carrying the large, wrapped box to the car. Afterwards, our plan was to find somewhere to eat. Preferably, a place with a patio. So, off we go.

Our first stop was to a well-known, high-end wine bar & pizzeria. What we found was a long wait. Then, it was agreed upon that the dining destination would be Central Market. On the way there, +1 commented....correction...was adamant about "NEEDING" salad and pizza. Bingo! We are a block away.

What started off as a uncharted journey turned out to be finding the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. We ended up at Brix Pizza and Wine Bar (2747 S. Hulen, Fort Worth). Close your eyes for a second. Well, after you read this. The sky is clear. The weather is perfect and hovering around the low 70's. The small, but, romantically lit patio is inviting and a table summons us to sit down as if it had been waiting all day for us to arrive.

I'll get to the food in a second, but, equally impressive was our server. Leo...correction...Leonardo. "Leonardo" said with a strong Italian accent. He would go on to make our evening a great one. But, it was late and what did we come for? Food!

Opting for salads to start, me with the Caesar and +1 went with the Brix Salad. Both excellent choices. While their menu is somewhat extensive, deciding was easy as this had been discussed en route. We were going with the Margherita pizza. But, the menu threw us a hitch in our giddy up. Right below the Margherita was the Brix Signature Pizza. On the menu, both are listed with the exact same ingredients...Tomato Sauce, Mozzarella and Fresh Basil. After getting clarity from Leo, the Brix Signature Pizza was the way to go. The only difference was that this one was prepared with fresh, homemade mozzarella. Oh my!

What came out was a pizza that was reminiscent of being in Italy. A thin, crispy crust topped with the freshest ingredients and Brix had two happy campers. While full might be what my stomach was telling me, something prompted me to ask Leonardo about dessert. He mentioned three amazing-sounding options. Those being Tiramisu, Cannoli and Nutella Pizza. I believe I even whimpered when "Nutella" was mentioned, but, it was his reaction to the Cannoli that led us to that one. Like the rest of the meal, it did not disappoint. And, like the rest of the meal, there were no remnants of food left on the plate.

This was definitely one of those evenings where the planets were aligned. Perfect weather, inviting atmosphere, wonderful food and an ambiance that screamed 'Date Night!" Thank you, Universe, for delivering all of the above-mentioned. And, thank you for Brix!

Fort Worth Date Night: You had me at "chicken-fried steak!" (FW Business Press)

On a recent birthday celebration with my "random" group of friends from high school, I learned that friends should never be taken for granted. In the same lightbulb moment, it also struck me that food also should not be taken for granted. Like an old college entrance exam question, can I now deduce that food is equal to a friend? I've always known that food is my friend. And, in sad or down times, perhaps, even my best friend.

In my world, there is no better comfort food than anything fried. The State Fair of Texas is nearing and much of the media focus is on the fried offerings from the Fair. Mouth-watering selections such as fried Snickers, fried peanut butter and jelly and this year's all abuzz about fried butter. My first thought was, "Yech!" That is, until I saw it being made on a morning show. Now, my opinion has changed. I'm actually looking forward to trying that artery-blocking concoction.

But, I'm a little more traditional. I am partial to the good ol' chicken-fried steak (CFS). Very simply, a steak that is breaded and fried. While I try to watch my girlish figure, every few months I crave chicken-fried steak. Well, my yearning has been yelling at me, as of late. Thank goodness for a friend's birthday celebration to fill my unanswered prayer.

We recently found ourselves at Grady's Restaurant (2443 Forest Park Blvd.). Well-known restauranteur and chef, Grady Spear's, newest eatery. As a lifelong resident of Fort Worth, I was immediately brought back to the days of when Le Chardonnay filled this locale. Even as a youngster, I always loved this space. It was quaint, quiet and the ambiance was soothing. Grady's has not lost that. On a rainy, stormy night, it was calm, cozy and comfortable.

Upon perusing the menu, could I really have anything else but the chicken-fried steak? C'mon! This is what Grady is known for. Besides, my buddy, Big Dave, was just as excited about the chicken-fried steak as a kid waking up on Christmas morning. We had to do this together. We had to have a male bonding moment and share the CFS experience. Much like two fraternity brothers going through pledgeship together.

So, the CFS arrives and it really was picture-worthy. If the statement that everything is bigger in Texas is true, then, the CFS from Grady's won't disappoint. This bad boy is massive. But, forget about the size. What about the taste and quality? I'm going to have to go with two big thumbs up. Wow! Great quality steak, perfectly breaded and topped with a perfect cream gravy. Not to mention, it was all resting comfortably on a bed of green onion mashed potatoes. Big Dave and I left no evidence of our gluttony. For any of you who were Friends watchers, we definitely needed the maternity pants that Joey wore when he bet that he could finish the Thanksgving turkey.

Everyone else loved what they ordered. Some went with entrees and others loaded up on appetizers. If you are looking for a fantastic meal, a romantic setting and an environment that will allow you two to really connect, Grady's will be the perfect choice. I'm pretty sure the famous foodie, Charlie Trotter, summed up my experience precisely when he said, "All four elements were happening in equal measure – the cuisine, the wine, the service and the overall ambience. It taught me that dining could happen at a spiritual level."

Fort Worth Date Night: I Got You Babe! (FW Business Press)

If you are single or, when you were single, what is the one date you could always fall back on? Dinner and a movie, right? It might be a little boring and predictable, but, it’s safe. Obviously, there are pros and cons. The upside is that it is a reliable date. While monotonous, you don’t have to be creative and the decision to go can be made at the last minute. The major downside is, if you are watching a movie, you are not talking. However, some things are better left unsaid. You can always do a little hand holding or a gentle touch to let her know how you are feeling. Also, a movie may be so good, you guys can talk about it after. This week’s Date Night will give you two something to talk about for days.

We are going to take a little road trip. It’s not far and just a short drive to the northeast. Every summer, the town of Frisco hosts “Movies in the Square.” What a cool concept! The movies are projected on a giant, 26’ x 13’ inflatable movie screen located on Simpson Plaza in Frisco Square and admission is free. Live, pre-show entertainment begins at 8:30 p.m. on most movies nights. You are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and refreshments to enjoy the outdoor movies in comfort. Popcorn will be available for a nominal fee.

The movie this week is the 1995 classic, Babe. This Friday, July 24, check out this flick about a pig beautifully set in Australia. Babe was nominated for six Academy Awards and won one for visual effects. Jeff Shannon perfectly described this movie when he wrote, “Babe is all about the title character, a heroic little pig who's been taken in by the friendly farmer Hoggett (Oscar nominee James Cromwell), who senses that he and the pig share “a common destiny.” Babe, a popular mischief-maker on the Australian farm, is adopted by the resident border collie and raised as a puppy, befriended by Ferdinand the duck (who thinks he's a rooster), and saves the day as a champion "sheep-pig."

Between here and Frisco, there are a ton of great restaurant choices where you can “pig” out. Just don’t eat too much. No one wants to hear you “squeal” during the movie. Of course, it is a public place, so, be careful about the “swine” flu. I know; I know…stop with the bad pig puns! Well, start planning your Date Night for this weekend. In other words, get shakin’, “Bacon!”

Fort Worth Date Night: Café Aspen hits the Big 2-0! (FW Business Press)

English writer, Aldous Huxley, once wrote, “Facts do not cease to exist just because they are ignored.” The fact remains that Café Aspen is still here. Fort Worth has seen its share of eateries come and go. The only thing Café Aspen has done over the last 20 years is expand in size and maintain its fan base.  With the 747 (approximation) new restaurants either already opened or planning to open this year on the west side of Fort Worth, the odds are stacked against them. To be open 20 years in the restaurant industry is impressive.

What started off as a small restaurant on West Seventh Street exactly 20 years ago is now an established fixture on Camp Bowie.  Like many businesses, it has gone through several overhauls. It has arguably one of the most quaint, romantic bar areas in town. Also impressive is their newest addition added a few years back, their outdoor patio/bar. 

Back to the facts. The fact that owner, David Rotman, is not from Fort Worth should not be held against him. Originally from Austin, he’s more or less a Fort Worthian.  I’m not sure we could get rid of him if we tried. He was not only a TCU Horned Frog, but, a little known fact is that David was a cheerleader while attending. GO FROGS! The fact that Rotman has an amazing support system around him also speaks volumes for Café Aspen. Dedicated and loyal staff…check.  Loving and amazing wife, Andrea…check.  Beautiful and adorable daughter, Lucinda…check.  You can’t argue with the facts.

Since this week marks a milestone for Café Aspen and Mr. Rotman, David has decided to give back to the community as a sign of appreciation for 20 years of patronage. Through April 18 you can get the Pepper Crusted Beef Tenderloin for only $12.95.  One of Aspen’s best sellers, the menu describes this beef dish as “Pepper crusted beef tenderloin, pan seared and finished in the oven. Topped with a roasted garlic and bleu cheese sauce.  Paired with grilled portabello mushrooms and roasted fingerling potatoes.”  If this alone doesn’t draw you two in for this week’s Date Night, I’m not sure what will. 

Since April 17 is the actual anniversary date of Café Aspen, there is also this one-day offer that is equally generous.  Friday only, all entrees are 20 percent off.  Let me repeat that.  All entrees are 20 percent off. This doesn’t mean the total bill, drinks, desserts, T-shirts or anything else.  Just the entrees.  Also, there will be no double-dipping.  If you take advantage of the $12.95 beef tenderloin, you cannot take 20 percent off that.  David is generous; he’s not stupid.

If you have never been to Café Aspen or it has been a while, please stop by and give it a try. At the least, congratulate David Rotman on an accomplishment that very few in this town have been able to achieve.  Not many people stay in their jobs for 20 years. Most marriages don’t last 20 years. And, we all know the usual fate of a new restaurant. But, Café Aspen has done it. And, done it with class, grace and consistency. Great job, David!  Salud!

Fort Worth Date Night: A little fuzzy & a little fishy (FW Business Press)

Many, many years ago, I found myself in Puerto Vallarta.  Well, perhaps, I wasn't really lost, I was with friends during a college spring break. A beautiful hotel, the ocean, open markets...this was going to be a relaxing week.

Upon arrival to the hotel room, my friend, Pigeon, and I immediately began to unpack. Midway through the only work planned for the week, I see Pigeon lose his balance and he and his suitcase go flying across the room. As a naive college lad, I chalked it up to too many Dos Equis on the flight over. But, about the time of his tumble, I felt something, too. As it turns out, we had experienced a minor earthquake. Perhaps, a foreshadowing of the week to come.

We enjoyed the beaches during the day and were off to the clubs at night. On one of our first nights, we were invited to a "fiesta" at a local hotel.  Let me set the scene. A pool, a bunch of tables with chairs, a buffet and a mariachi band.  To gain entrance to this party, two things must take place. First, you pay 10 bucks. Next, and this should have been the red flag, we were given a homemade shot glass, tied to a lanyard, put around our neck and this "art project" is filled with tequila. Mind you, we are not talking about a tequila considered "high grade." 

Over the next couple of hours, it was all about eating, shots, dancing, shots, more eating and, then...shots, shots and more shots. At some point, I remember donning a sombrero, a beautifully woven Mexican sarape and jumping on stage with the Mariachi band. I'm not sure many of the band members were actually in sync as they were laughing too hard from me continuously yelling, "Borracho!" (see Spanish dictionary) The pictures have been destroyed and, until writing this article, so were the memories.

The next morning, we found a local cafe and I was introduced to one of the greatest dishes. It was fish tacos.  Warm corn tortillas filled with lightly fried white fish, white cheese and homemade salsa. This was a big plate of love and, more importantly, helped in making the night before go away.

Since then, let's hope that I've grown wiser and more mature. I still don't partake in tequila to this day. However, I have not lost my affinity for fish tacos or fish burritos. Which is why Fort Worth is so lucky to have Fuzzy's Taco Shop (2917 W Berry St., Fort Worth).  Their menu is extensive.  Whether it be one of my favorites, the potato, egg and cheese burrito or my VERY favorite, the tempura fish burrito...everything I've consumed at Fuzzy's is fantastic. Let's get back to the fish burrito. A giant burrito filled with delicately cooked tempura-coated fish.  I prefer mine with only guacomole, lettuce and cheese.  Fuzzy's is very accomodating and will prepare your dish to your liking. 

Fuzzy's Taco Shop is located near TCU, not far from the intersection of Berry and University. It is very casual and extremely affordable. More importantly, you'll feel as though you are dining in an authentic Mexican eatery. The perfect place no matter if you are on a date or recovering from one. And, should we meet there, I can guarantee that I will not be the one wearing a sombrero.  A lamp shade, maybe...but, definitely not a sombrero.  Buenos Dias!

Fort Worth Date Night: It’s all about ME! (Fort Worth Business Press)

Last Friday was my birthday.  I’m not the type to get excited about birthdays.  Everyone around me gets excited.  Me...not so much. A few weeks out, the questions and e-mails started, “Are you looking forward to the big day?”  And, this wasn’t even a big one. I suppose that, growing up, I never wanted to look forward to something just in case I was disappointed. This transferred over to adulthood. I’m very baseline when it comes to the excitement level in regards to my personal celebrations.

Back to last Friday.  PR Chick asked me weeks out to take me to lunch on my birthday. Her birthday actually fell the day after, so, we were looking at a mini-combination celebration. However, since lunch was transpiring on my actual birthday…the focus was on me. PR Chick lives in Dallas and we decided to meet in Fort Worth. After much thought, I chose Lili’s Bistro on Magnolia. I’ve heard about this place, read about it, sent clients there, but, had never personally experienced what all the fuss was about.

So, last Friday was the big day. I arrive to see PR Chick holding a huge “birthday-looking” gift bag. I already love Lili’s. It’s not a big place.  And, everyone in Fort Worth must have gotten the same memo as there was a bit of a wait.  I’m not a big fan of waiting, but, we were already there, that was the plan and nothing was going to change. I’m eating at Lili’s!

After we were finally seated and given menus, I did what anyone else would have done. I ripped into my birthday bag. Then, it was time to focus on the matter-at-hand. It was time to order. The menu is diverse, but, EVERYTHING on it sounded amazing. People waiting around us talked up the burgers.  I was really leaning towards the Tilapia tacos. However, when it came time to make the decision, I went with the sesame seed chicken. As long as the wait was, the order seemed to come out pretty quickly. I was not disappointed.  And, the portions are huge. Two of my favorite things…large portions and great food! 

The perfectly-crusted chicken was sitting on a bed of rice. However, one of the most impressive parts of the plate was what came with the entrée. A basic lettuce wedge with a Gorgonzola dressing and bacon crumbles.  Sounds pretty ho-hum, right?  PR Chick and I both agreed that we could have eaten just a large plate of the salad. By the way, PR Chick ordered salmon and was “Mmmm-ing” equally as much as I was. However, the “Mmmm’s” turned to “Ahhhh’s” when dessert arrived.

We went with the Rocky Roady Fudge Torte. Words can’t really do it justice.  Perhaps, the menu says it’s best… “Chocolate chip cookie crust, Belgian chocolate, butter, cream cheese and almond middle, and a cream cheese frosting top. Drizzled with chocolate ganache.” My first bite was pretty intense.  So many things going on at one time. It was time to turn our lunch into a CSI crime scene and unlock each mystery layer one-by-one. After dissecting this cake and sent walking with a full belly and a bag of birthday presents, there was only one thing that could top lunch at Lili’s Bistro on Magnolia…a birthday nap!

What's your Schlotzsky's?

There are many questions, comments and pressures that come with the title of "The Romance CEO."  The pressure being that, since I am single, people often wonder if every date with me has to rival an episode of The Bachelor.  Perhaps, a helicopter ride to lunch or a horse-drawn carriage ride through the streets of downtown to a privately catered dinner.  And, during dinner, Michael Buble serenades us with his hits.  The answer to this is a categorical "Uhhhhh...NO!"

 

While these amazing dates make for great TV, they don't necessarily define romance.  We often hear the phrase, "don't sweat the small stuff."  When it comes to romance, I believe that "the small stuff" is exactly what you should focus on.  In a recent article, I mentioned Valentine's Day being an important day.  While you should do "something" for your special someone on this day, picking up flowers from the grocery store at the last minute, fighting crowds in a restaurant and grabbing a box of chocolates in the checkout line does not equal romance.

 

It's what you do the other 364 days out of the year that count.  The "for no reason" gifts and the "just because" cards are the manna from heaven.  These are the nuggets that will have her or him bragging about you at the gym, at the watercooler and at the hair salon.  Whether I'm meeting with a client, doing an interview or speaking to an audience, the one thing I always stress when it comes to a marriage proposal is that it has to be all about HER.  The marriage proposal has very little to do with who is doing the asking and everything to do with who is being asked.  When you are in a relationship, this should be your mantra every day of the year.

 

And, don't worry that you'll be taken advantage of.  The favor will be returned.  Haven't you heard the expression "Do unto others as you would have done unto you?"  This is so true in relationships. 

 

During a recent trip to the gym, I got engaged (no pun intended) in a conversation with a fellow yoga buff after class. She's a woman in her 30's, but appears much younger.  She is the type of person who lights up when you talk to her and thoroughly enjoy being around.  She's married with one child.  So, I asked, "Do you have big plans for Valentine's Day?"  Without missing a beat, her huge blue eyes got bigger, her face lit up and with an overjoyed grin, said, "This is the best story!"  She proceeded to tell me that this time last year, they were doing some major construction on their home, particularly, an outdoor patio.  They finished late in the day on Valentine's Day and were starving.  Yoga Girl ran to Schlotzsky's, picked up some food, returned home and they ate it by their brand-new outdoor firepit.  Fast forward exactly one year to this Valentine's Day.

 

"Do you have big plans for Valentine's Day?"  The plan was to relive last year.  "We are going to pick up Schlotzsky's again and eat it by the firepit."  And, when I asked what they were eating, she was ecstatic to share they get a large "Original" and split it.  They have now created a memory and a tradition.  Even though money is no option, this annual experience is now something that means the world to them.

 

So, I leave you with this thought...  When you feel the pressure of "doing it right" or planning the perfect date, there is not a template.  Take the pressure off and know that there is not a universal perfect date.  What makes it perfect is that it is specific to just the two of you. With that said, the next time you go to plan a Valentine's Day date, a birthday celebration, an anniversary, a weekend away or a date for no reason at all, ask yourself, "What's YOUR Schlotzsky's?"

Recently, two satellites collided in space. One of those satellites was described as a Russian military space vehicle. My immediate thought was, "I would hate to have been that driver!"  Driving along in space, minding your business and along comes an Iridium communications satellite and just ruins your day. Better call Geico.  But, there was good news. The "space vehicle" was unmanned.

A few days ago, from North Texas down to Austin, witnesses saw a fireball shooting through the sky. Initial thoughts were that it was a chunk from one of these destroyed satellites. After further review, it was determined that this "matter" was likely a meteor. A meteor the size of a truck. So, I thought, "what exactly is a meteor?"

This question led to this week's date. You are about to learn everything (and more) that you've ever wanted to know about meteors. On the campus of our beloved, Texas Christian University, lies the Oscar E. Monnig Meteorite Gallery.  According to their official website, a trip to this museum and you will "learn how to identify a meteorite, experience a hands-on encounter with different types of meteorites, and create your own terrestrial impact crater." I'm not sure what the last part means, but, as a guy, it just sounds "cool."

Clam chowder, the Golden Gate Bridge, Ghirardelli Square and all the great hole-in-the-wall restaurants make San Francisco one of the top tourist spots in the country...if not, the world. I have been fortunate enough to visit this great city. It was not December, so, the city was not all "holidayed" out with lights. One of the top visitor attractions during December is a Christmas Light tour on a cable car. How fun would that be???

There is another Frisco and it is much closer to the DFW area. It just doesn't have a "San" in front of it. Each year, the town of Frisco proudly plays host to "Christmas in the Square." Frisco is expecting over 450,000 visitors during its run. There will be many activities going on each night from 5:30 pm to 10 pm through January 1, 2009.

Perhaps the most memorable aspect of Christmas in the Square is the Christmas lights. Their Web site describes the whole experience as, "The largest choreographed holiday lights and music display in Texas combined with family-oriented activities to produce a 'signature destination event' for Frisco."
