Ask and Ye Shall Receive: 4 simple tips to asking her out

From time t0 time, I have been fortunate to be asked to guest blog on others' blogs. This has to be one of the highest honors as a blogger. This was posted on Live The Charmed Life (www.livethecharmedlife.com) in December 2009. Thanks, DeeAnne!

I’m very happy to share a wonderful guest post by Mike Bloomberg, The Romance CEO. In asking Mike to contribute an article for Live The Charmed Life, I asked that he write something from the man’s perspective on relationships. After sharing many great ideas, and agreeing that we should collaborate again in the future, we decided on a reprint of one of his most popular articles. What follows is something that everyone can benefit from. If you’re a man, here are some helpful tips on getting up the courage to ask the girl of your dreams out for the first time. If you’re a woman, I think you will gain a whole new respect for what men go through in often being expected to make the first move. Either way, it only reinforces how truly alike we are. Many thanks to Mike, and ENJOY!

Ask and Ye Shall Receive: 4 simple tips to asking her out

You are standing in line at the pharmacy. You turn around just to kill time as the person in front of you is counting out the six-month prescription they just picked up to make sure all the pills are there, and there she is. Blue eyes, dimples, nice smile and what do you do…turn around and face the front. Your mind starts racing. Should I turn back around? Should I just introduce myself? What should I say?

Another scenario might be this. You see her at the gym at the same time every day. She is always on the treadmill when you are on the bike. It started off as a smile, evolved into small talk and, now, there is some flirting going on. Even when you are not at the gym, she is on your mind. Your friends have heard all about her. Your barber has even heard about her. But, still, no action on your part to ask her out.

Guys, we have all been there. Each of us have a different reaction to just the thought of having to do it. For some, it is like breathing. For the rest of us, we would rather have our bodies waxed by Aunt Gertie than to have to do this. I am talking about asking someone out for the first time. Here are a few tips to make this decision a little easier:

Confidence, confidence, confidence! If you are not self-assured and seem as if your skin was custom fit for you, then do not even bother talking to her, much less, asking her out. There is nothing less attractive to a woman than a man who is not confident. I am not talking about being “cocky” when you approach her. She will not be impressed with that. Here’s a little tip…visualization. Don’t worry, you do not have to go to yoga class and meditate for 6 hours. Picture yourself as 100 feet tall when you talk to her. Even now, just close your eyes and picture it. There is something about being above everyone else that invokes confidence. When talking to her, even if you are scared to death, act as is if you were born to do this. Fake it ‘til you make it!

Every breath you take. Do not forget to breathe. Like a well-conditioned athlete, when asking someone out, it is always important to take a deep breath and to continue to breathe throughout the conversation. You do not want to seem nervous or start sweating when talking to her.

What do you have to lose? In the last few years, I have started socializing with a new group of friends. We go to dinner, go bowling, and do happy hours. One of the guys is gay. While at a Super Bowl party, he decided it was time to tell me he had a crush on me…in front of about 10 people. Needless to say, I was speechless. However, I was not offended. In an odd way, I was jealous. So many times, I have wanted to tell this girl or that girl that I really liked them. If a gay guy could tell a straight guy in front of a lot of people, then why couldn’t I just ask someone out when it was just the two of us? I have been around this guy a few more times and we are still friends. Moral of the story…just go for it. At the least, the outcome is going to be the exact same as it is now, except that you went for it.

She may be sitting home like you. There is an adorable girl who works at my gym. O.K, she is hot. She often complained about the horrors of dating in college. Guys rarely ask girls out. Often, dates consist of meeting up with each other at the bar. Recently, she talked about this new guy she has been seeing. She said it was someone she had met socially through mutual friends. While he was funny, she was not initially physically attracted to him. I asked why she chose to go out with him and her response was this, “He asked.” Those two words put everything into perspective. HE ASKED…plain and simple.

A wise man once said that 98% of what we worry about never happens. Never have truer words been uttered. We often think of what the outcome could be and rarely are we correct. How many times have you said, “that went way better than I thought it was going to?” Apply that to your dating life. Even if she is not interested, not available or the timing is just not good, if your approach is that of a gentleman, most women feel honored to be pursued. Wayne Gretzky, hockey great, said it best, “you will miss 100% of the shots you never take.” Go ahead…shoot! You might even score.

Fort Worth Date Night: I Got You Babe! (FW Business Press)

+ enlarge photo

If you are single or, when you were single, what is the one date you could always fall back on? Dinner and a movie, right? It might be a little boring and predictable, but, it’s safe. Obviously, there are pros and cons. The upside is that it is a reliable date. While monotonous, you don’t have to be creative and the decision to go can be made at the last minute. The major downside is, if you are watching a movie, you are not talking. However, some things are better left unsaid. You can always do a little hand holding or a gentle touch to let her know how you are feeling. Also, a movie may be so good, you guys can talk about it after. This week’s Date Night will give you two something to talk about for days.

We are going to take a little road trip. It’s not far and just a short drive to the northeast. Every summer, the town of Frisco hosts “Movies in the Square.” What a cool concept! The movies are projected on a giant, 26’ x 13’ inflatable movie screen located on Simpson Plaza in Frisco Square and admission is free. Live, pre-show entertainment begins at 8:30 p.m. on most movies nights. You are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets and refreshments to enjoy the outdoor movies in comfort. Popcorn will be available for a nominal fee.

The movie this week is the 1995 classic, Babe. This Friday, July 24, check out this flick about a pig beautifully set in Australia. Babe was nominated for six Academy Awards and won one for visual effects. Jeff Shannon perfectly described this movie when he wrote, “Babe is all about the title character, a heroic little pig who's been taken in by the friendly farmer Hoggett (Oscar nominee James Cromwell), who senses that he and the pig share “a common destiny.” Babe, a popular mischief-maker on the Australian farm, is adopted by the resident border collie and raised as a puppy, befriended by Ferdinand the duck (who thinks he's a rooster), and saves the day as a champion "sheep-pig."

Between here and Frisco, there are a ton of great restaurant choices where you can “pig” out. Just don’t eat too much. No one wants to hear you “squeal” during the movie. Of course, it is a public place, so, be careful about the “swine” flu. I know; I know…stop with the bad pig puns! Well, start planning your Date Night for this weekend. In other words, get shakin’, “Bacon!”

The Bachelor: After the Final Rose! The Most Controversial Blog Post EVER!

It's been a week since America "officially" found out about who The Bachelor, Jason Mesnick, picked as his final choice.  Well, so we thought.  I've been going back and forth on whether to write this blog entry.  I finally gave in.  So, here it is.  I am happy for Jason from this season of The Bachelor.

As not popular as this is, it's my blog and I can write if I want to.  Trust me, I've seen the status updates on Facebook and heard the radio call-ins.  People are pissed.  Especially, the female gender.  Anyone who knows me knows that I have tons of female friends, usually side with women and often see things from the girls' angle.

I also loved Melissa from The Bachelor.  She's one of those unique girls where guys want her and girls want to be BFFs with her.  She's a guy's girl.  Naturally gorgeous, loves sports and is totally fine with hanging out.  And, her goal in life is to have a family, marry her best friend and please him.  Sign me up!  She's in Dallas and I'm in Fort Worth.  The demographics work out perfectly.

I guess I should back up if you didn't watch The Bachelor this season.  The producers picked the runner-up from The Bachelorette the season prior.  His name is Jason.  One of the reasons I was so interested in watching this season is that Jason reminds me a lot of me...a good guy.  Not edgy, not dangerous...not boring, but, responsible and genuine.

So, Jason dates 25 girls throughout 6 weeks or so and, by the end of all this, hopes he finds his wife and future step-mother to his young son, Ty.  Fast forward to the end of the show.  He's left to pick between Molly and Melissa.  He goes with Melissa.  Drops to one knee, pops the question, finally tells her he loves her...the whole nine yards.  Fast forward 6 weeks.  Jason has a change of heart at the reunion show and breaks up with Melissa and picks Molly.  The world is pissed!  You would have thought that someone told President Obama that he wasn't the president of the free world any longer and McCain has taken his spot.  At any time, Ashton Kutcher comes out and punks the president.

So, at this final reunion show, Jason officially breaks up with Melissa and tells her he still has feelings for Molly.  Melissa is livid, gives the ring back, yadda, yadda, yadda...commercial break...Molly comes out.  Jason tells her he still loves her, she's is shocked, they talk...ride off into the sunset like an old western.

Let me say that I was, and still am, a huge fan of Melissa.  Dude...she's hot!  But, so sweet and you just rooted for her.  It was obvious that Jason was crazy about her, too.  So, why did he pick her if he wasn't going to stay with her?  And, embarrass her on national tv?

That was not Jason's intent.  However, these relationships begin and end on the most bizarre circumstances.  Who has a first date where you are flown to another state and get a helicopter tour of the city, wrapping up with a celebrity coming out to give you a private concert?  Oh, and I did I mention that these contestants are living in a mansion?  Who wouldn't get completely engrossed in all that?

Here's what I'm thinking...  Jason shouldn't have proposed.  But, hindsight is 20/20.  At the time, I believe that is what he felt.  Then, the cameras were off and they really got to know each other.  Something clicked in his head and thought, "I can't go through with this."  You have to commend him for following his heart.  Did it suck that the breakup was on national tv?  Absolutely!  Was it horrible that he broke up with America's newest sweetheart, in general?  Yes!  The ironic part of that was that week in and week out, we rooted for Jason to break up with some of the girls.  Some of us yelling at our TVs. (not me)

There is also a buzz going around that Jason and Molly had contact between them before the actual reunion show.  I'm guessing..."probably happened."  Apparently, Jason broke up with Melissa a week before the reunion show.  And, officially ended things on the show.  Now, everyone is mad at Molly.  "Homewrecker!"  People...give me a break!

Molly wasn't my favorite.  However, after watching all that transpired, Jason and Molly belong together.  And Melissa can't be too heartbroken.  She apparently is dating someone from her past.  Ironically, his name is "Ty."  Sound familiar?  What's strange is that Melissa talked about never picking the right guy and now she's gone back to someone in her past.  So, maybe Jason did make the right choice.

Now, Melissa is rumored to be a last-minute fill-in on this year's Dancing with the Stars.  So, if she is completely hurt and devasted, then, she is getting over it by throwing herself back in the limelight.  It sounds like Melissa is going to be just fine.

Here's the real question to ask yourself.  Why does this show strike such a nerve?  Do people watch and are displacing their personal feelings towards Jason based on their past.  Without going into psychology, displacement can best be described as you've had a long day, traffic sucked coming home and you had a flat tire. You're livid!  You get out of the car, are greeted by your sweet cat and with one swift kick, the cat goes flying over the house.  You weren't actually mad at the cat, but, you took it out on the cat.

Perhaps, Jason's actions have prompted the same emotion in millions of people.  He represents the guy who dumped you for another girl, the husband who didn't want to be married any longer or the "typical" male that gives so many guys a bad name.  Or, it could be that since we had preconceived notions that Jason was a good, decent, genuine nice guy, we are doubly disappointed in him?  And, throw in the fact that we all loved Melissa and it makes for a messy situation.

We have to remember that is "reality" TV.  Because what we see on TV is real, right?  Not!  I was fortunate to have done a reality show a couple of years ago.  Fortunate because it took place in Bora Bora.  But, the experience was not all that great.  I can remember spending 2 hours driving around Santa Monica.  For the first hour, I had the camera man next to me and the producer in the back seat.  All while I had fake phone conversations on my mobile phone.  Then, more of the same for the next hour so they could get a different angle, the producer was in the passenger seat and the camera was in the backseat.  Over the next 5 days, this scenario was played over and over again.  I have no doubt that it wasn't any different for The Bachelor.  And, I won't even get into editing.

Here's what I wish for...  (1) Jason, Molly and Ty live happily ever after. (2) Melissa and her "Ty" live happily ever after.  And, if not, and you know Melissa, please give her my contact info and (3) that the month of May would hurry up and get here because I can not WAIT until The Bachelorette starts and we get to see Jillian go through this process all over again!  I LOVE her and I LOVE this darn show!!!

Fort Worth Date Night: It’s all about ME! (Fort Worth Business Press)

Last Friday was my birthday.  I’m not the type to get excited about birthdays.  Everyone around me gets excited.  Me...not so much. A few weeks out, the questions and e-mails started, “Are you looking forward to the big day?”  And, this wasn’t even a big one. I suppose that, growing up, I never wanted to look forward to something just in case I was disappointed. This transferred over to adulthood. I’m very baseline when it comes to the excitement level in regards to my personal celebrations.

Back to last Friday.  PR Chick asked me weeks out to take me to lunch on my birthday. Her birthday actually fell the day after, so, we were looking at a mini-combination celebration. However, since lunch was transpiring on my actual birthday…the focus was on me. PR Chick lives in Dallas and we decided to meet in Fort Worth. After much thought, I chose Lili’s Bistro on Magnolia. I’ve heard about this place, read about it, sent clients there, but, had never personally experienced what all the fuss was about.

So, last Friday was the big day. I arrive to see PR Chick holding a huge “birthday-looking” gift bag. I already love Lili’s. It’s not a big place.  And, everyone in Fort Worth must have gotten the same memo as there was a bit of a wait.  I’m not a big fan of waiting, but, we were already there, that was the plan and nothing was going to change. I’m eating at Lili’s!

After we were finally seated and given menus, I did what anyone else would have done. I ripped into my birthday bag. Then, it was time to focus on the matter-at-hand. It was time to order. The menu is diverse, but, EVERYTHING on it sounded amazing. People waiting around us talked up the burgers.  I was really leaning towards the Tilapia tacos. However, when it came time to make the decision, I went with the sesame seed chicken. As long as the wait was, the order seemed to come out pretty quickly. I was not disappointed.  And, the portions are huge. Two of my favorite things…large portions and great food!

The perfectly-crusted chicken was sitting on a bed of rice. However, one of the most impressive parts of the plate was what came with the entrĂ©e. A basic lettuce wedge with a Gorgonzola dressing and bacon crumbles.  Sounds pretty ho-hum, right?  PR Chick and I both agreed that we could have eaten just a large plate of the salad. By the way, PR Chick ordered salmon and was “Mmmm-ing” equally as much as I was. However, the “Mmmm’s” turned to “Ahhhh’s” when dessert arrived.

We went with the Rocky Roady Fudge Torte. Words can’t really do it justice.  Perhaps, the menu says it’s best… “Chocolate chip cookie crust, Belgian chocolate, butter, cream cheese and almond middle, and a cream cheese frosting top. Drizzled with chocolate ganache.” My first bite was pretty intense.  So many things going on at one time. It was time to turn our lunch into a CSI crime scene and unlock each mystery layer one-by-one. After dissecting this cake and sent walking with a full belly and a bag of birthday presents, there was only one thing that could top lunch at Lili’s Bistro on Magnolia…a birthday nap!

What's your Schlotzsky's?

There are many questions, comments and pressures that come with the title of "The Romance CEO."  The pressure being that, since I am single, people often wonder if every date with me has to rival an episode of The Bachelor.  Perhaps, a helicopter ride to lunch or a horse-drawn carriage ride through the streets of downtown to a privately catered dinner.  And, during dinner, Michael Buble serenades us with his hits.  The answer to this is a categorical "Uhhhhh...NO!"

While these amazing dates make for great TV, they don't necessarily define romance.  We often hear the phrase, "don't sweat the small stuff."  When it comes to romance, I believe that "the small stuff" is exactly what you should focus on.  In a recent article, I mentioned Valentine's Day being an important day.  While you should do "something" for your special someone on this day, picking up flowers from the grocery store at the last minute, fighting crowds in a restaurant and grabbing a box of chocolates in the checkout line does not equal romance.

It's what you do the other 364 days out of the year that count.  The "for no reason" gifts and the "just because" cards are the manna from heaven.  These are the nuggets that will have her or him bragging about you at the gym, at the watercooler and at the hair salon.  Whether I'm meeting with a client, doing an interview or speaking to an audience, the one thing I always stress when it comes to a marriage proposal is that it has to be all about HER.  The marriage proposal has very little to do with who is doing the asking and everything to do with who is being asked.  When you are in a relationship, this should be your mantra every day of the year.

And, don't worry that you'll be taken advantage of.  The favor will be returned.  Haven't you heard the expression "Do unto others as you would have done unto you?"  This is so true in relationships.

During a recent trip to the gym, I got engaged (no pun intended) in a conversation with a fellow yoga buff after class. She's a woman in her 30's, but appears much younger.  She is the type of person who lights up when you talk to her and thoroughly enjoy being around.  She's married with one child.  So, I asked, "Do you have big plans for Valentine's Day?"  Without missing a beat, her huge blue eyes got bigger, her face lit up and with an overjoyed grin, said, "This is the best story!"  She proceeded to tell me that this time last year, they were doing some major construction on their home, particularly, an outdoor patio.  They finished late in the day on Valentine's Day and were starving.  Yoga Girl ran to Schlotzsky's, picked up some food, returned home and they ate it by their brand-new outdoor firepit.  Fast forward exactly one year to this Valentine's Day.

"Do you have big plans for Valentine's Day?"  The plan was to relive last year.  "We are going to pick up Schlotzsky's again and eat it by the firepit."  And, when I asked what they were eating, she was ecstatic to share they get a large "Original" and split it.  They have now created a memory and a tradition.  Even though money is no option, this annual experience is now something that means the world to them.

So, I leave you with this thought...  When you feel the pressure of "doing it right" or planning the perfect date, there is not a template.  Take the pressure off and know that there is not a universal perfect date.  What makes it perfect is that it is specific to just the two of youWith that said, the next time you go to plan a Valentine's Day date, a birthday celebration, an anniversary, a weekend away or a date for no reason at all, ask yourself, "What's YOUR Schlotzsky's?"

Fort Worth Date Night: The Sky is Falling! (FW Business Press)

Fort Worth Date Night: The Sky is Falling!
By MIKE BLOOMBERG
Feb. 18, 2009

Recently, two satellites collided in space. One of those satellites was described as a Russian military space vehicle. My immediate thought was, "I would hate to have been that driver!"  Driving along in space, minding your business and along comes an Iridium communications satellite and just ruins your day. Better call Geico.  But, there was good news. The "space vehicle" was unmanned.

A few days ago, from North Texas down to Austin, witnesses saw a fireball shooting through the sky. Initial thoughts were that it was a chunk from one of these destroyed satellites. After further review, it was determined that this "matter" was likely a meteor. A meteor the size of a truck. So, I thought, "what exactly is a meteor?"

This question led to this week's date. You are about to learn everything (and more) that you've ever wanted to know about meteors. On the campus of our beloved, Texas Christian University, lies the Oscar E. Monnig Meteorite Gallery.  According to their official website, a trip to this museum and you will "learn how to identify a meteorite, experience a hands-on encounter with different types of meteorites, and create your own terrestrial impact crater." I'm not sure what the last part means, but, as a guy, it just sounds "cool."

For location, hours and complete information, please visit:http://monnigmuseum.tcu.edu/. An audio wand is available and, the best part...FREE admission!

Fort Worth Date Night: Sans the San (FW Business Press)

Fort Worth Date Night: Sans the San
BY MIKE BLOOMBERG
December 23, 2008

Clam chowder, the Golden Gate Bridge, Ghirardelli Square and all the great hole-in-the-wall restaurants make San Francisco one of the top tourist spots in the country...if not, the world. I have been fortunate enough to visit this great city. It was not December, so, the city was not all "holidayed" out with lights. One of the top visitor attractions during December is a Christmas Light tour on a cable car. How fun would that be???

There is another Frisco and it is much closer to the DFW area. It just doesn't have a "San" in front of it. Each year, the town of Frisco proudly plays host to "Christmas in the Square." Frisco is expecting over 450,000 visitors during its run. There will be many activities going on each night from 5:30 pm to 10 pm through January 1, 2009.

Perhaps the most memorable aspect of Christmas in the Square is the Christmas lights. Their Web site describes the whole experience as, "The largest choreographed holiday lights and music display in Texas combined with family-oriented activities to produce a 'signature destination event' for Frisco."

For complete information on Christmas in the Square, please visit www.friscosquare.com.
